Accelerating Carbon Storage Optimization /consulting/totalenergies/ Mon, 02 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 /consulting/totalenergies/ To support their carbon neutrality ambitions, the global energy company TotalEnergies developed a complex optimization model for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). This highly sophisticated model, capable of managing the complex CO2 logistics, struggled with slow runtimes and complex code that limited its practical use. GAMS Consulting stepped in to streamline the model, reducing simulation runtimes from hours to minutes and enabling long-term scenario analysis. Also, we developed a user-friendly Python and Excel interface that allowed engineers to run and analyze the model without the need for deep programming expertise. This collaboration has transformed the model into a robust decision-support tool, helping TotalEnergies scale up CCS projects for a net-zero future. How to use GAMS in Jupyter Notebooks /blog/2020/08/how-to-use-gams-in-jupyter-notebooks/ Fri, 21 Aug 2020 00:00:00 +0000 /blog/2020/08/how-to-use-gams-in-jupyter-notebooks/ We now provide integration of GAMS in Jupyter Notebook. This post summarizes how to get started. Dealing with Models that are Unbounded /blog/2020/07/dealing-with-models-that-are-unbounded/ Mon, 06 Jul 2020 00:00:00 +0000 /blog/2020/07/dealing-with-models-that-are-unbounded/
Optimization problems occasionally yield unbounded solutions. To find the cause one can modify the model and solve it to gain information. This is done through the imposition of “artificially” large bounds. Linear programming solvers discover unboundedness when they find a variable which is attractive to make larger, but find that the variable may be increased without limit. In GAMS some solvers return such information but typically only one unbounded variable will be reported, if any and there may be numerous other variables which have not been examined and could be unbounded. Unfortunately, the LST file does not generally give enough information to diagnose and fix the cause of the unboundedness and pre-solves rarely find such problems. Commonly, the solution report contains an instance where a particular item is tagged as unbounded (with the marker UNBND), but there will also be other variables marked as non-optimal (NOPT) which may or may not be unbounded. Finally, note that use of GAMSCHK ANALYSIS and correction of all identified problems and models still can be bounded. Thus, most modelers will occasionally contend with models that are unbounded and will need to discover what is causing that condition.
An open source TIMES/MIRO app - introducing MIRO 1.1.0 /blog/2020/07/an-open-source-times/miro-app-introducing-miro-1.1.0/ Fri, 03 Jul 2020 00:00:00 +0000 /blog/2020/07/an-open-source-times/miro-app-introducing-miro-1.1.0/ TIMES is a sophisticated energy model generator implemented in GAMS. It has been published under an open source license in 2019. Recently, GAMS joined forces with experienced TIMES users to develop an open-source TIMES/MIRO App that serves as a frontend to the TIMES model. This was made possible by new features in GAMS MIRO 1.1 New and improved GAMS links for Pyomo and JuMP /blog/2020/06/new-and-improved-gams-links-for-pyomo-and-jump/ Mon, 15 Jun 2020 11:30:24 +0100 /blog/2020/06/new-and-improved-gams-links-for-pyomo-and-jump/ We’ve got some new links from Pyomo and JuMP to GAMS, which allow efficient interfacing of GAMS with your Pyomo or JuMP models. Below we summarize what has changed.

Demo

We have changed the way we allow users to test GAMS (“demo mode”). We now require registration on our website and generating a demo license before using the software. Some might find this process annoying, but before introducing this new scheme, we simply did have no idea how many people were using GAMS in demo mode. For a company trying to understand and serve its customer base, this was utterly unsatisfactory. With the new scheme, we collect and process some personal data, which we use to generate a named license file - after all, demo licenses are not meant to be shared between users. Four weeks later, all personal data is automatically deleted (names, email-address, IP-address, even the license file itself). We keep just enough data to compile statistics about how many demo licenses have been generated over time, and which countries and organisations these licenses are popular in.
Phasing out of 32-bit support with GAMS 30 /blog/2020/01/phasing-out-of-32-bit-support-with-gams-30/ Mon, 06 Jan 2020 11:00:24 +0100 /blog/2020/01/phasing-out-of-32-bit-support-with-gams-30/
22 years ago, in 1998, we released the first native 32 bit windows version of GAMS. Scaling /blog/2017/08/scaling/ Mon, 14 Aug 2017 00:00:00 +0000 /blog/2017/08/scaling/
Sometimes models do odd things like reporting problems as infeasible, stuck or falsely optimal when scaling is the real issue. To avoid this or correct such issues it is often desirable to check scaling and in turn rescale the model or ask the solvers to employ more aggressive scaling.

In terms of solver scaling most LP/MIP solvers do automatic scaling and a number have the option to apply a more aggressive scaling to numerically difficult models, e.g. Cplex option scanind, Gurobi option scaleflag, or Xpress option scaling. However, modelers can typically do better because they know how certain variables and equations are interrelated and can scale with common factors while the solvers do not have that knowledge. Generally, for difficult problems it is desirable to do the scaling as discussed below then let the solver scale as well. Scaling is typically not a concern for small problems.
Misbehaving Model – Infeasible /blog/2017/07/misbehaving-model-infeasible/ Thu, 27 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 /blog/2017/07/misbehaving-model-infeasible/
I was talking to the GAMS staff and they informed me as to what their most common supportcalls involve. CONOPT is a feasible path solver based on the old proven GRG method with many newer extensions. CONOPT has been designed to be efficient and reliable for a broad class of models. The original GRG method helps achieve reliability and speed for models with a large degree of nonlinearity, i.e. difficult models, and CONOPT is often preferable for very nonlinear models and for models where feasibility is difficult to achieve. Extensions to the GRG method such as preprocessing, a special phase 0, linear mode iterations, and a sequential linear programming and a sequential quadratic programming component makes CONOPT efficient on easier and mildly nonlinear models as well. The multi-method architecture of CONOPT combined with build-in logic for dynamic selection of the most appropriate method makes CONOPT a strong all-round NLP solver.
Thomas Maindl /specialists/maindl_sdb/ Mon, 01 Jan 0001 00:00:00 +0000 /specialists/maindl_sdb/
Thomas Maindl

Lorem ipsum

Vaibhavnath /team/vjha/ Mon, 01 Jan 0001 00:00:00 +0000 /team/vjha/
Title

Publications

Hobbies
Versions of CONOPT /products/conopt/versions/ Mon, 01 Jan 0001 00:00:00 +0000 /products/conopt/versions/
Versions of CONOPT

The latest version of CONOPT3 is version 3.17.
